Management Challenge
Each year Taituarā runs the New Zealand leg of the Management Challenge, Australasia’s premier forum for current and emerging local government leaders. The Australasian Management Challenge is developed in Australia by LG Professionals Australia and delivered by Taituarā in New Zealand. It is sponsored by JLT. The winners of the New Zealand leg then go on to represent New Zealand at the Australasian Finals. There they compete against the winning teams from the seven Australian states and territories. New Zealand teams have an exceptional record at the finals with four firsts during recent years, including the team from Hauraki District Council winning in 2020.
About the 2021 Management Challenge
The 2021 New Zealand leg of the JLT Australasian Management Challenge took place on Tuesday 13 April, with a welcome event for teams on Monday 12 April. In Our Element, from Otago Regional Council took 1st place at the 2021 competition, followed by Auaha, from Hutt City Council in 2nd place and Flight of the Kotuku, Bay of Plenty Regional Council in 3rd place.
About the 2020 Management Challenge
The 2020 Management Challenge was held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Six teams took part in the NZ Leg of the Challenge and the winning team from Hauraki District Council went on to compete in the finals that were held in October. The team from Hauraki were announced as the overall winners in December, taking out the Challenge against seven teams from Australia.

The Management Challenge is designed to enhance leadership and management skills of managers and staff in local government. This team-based learning and development programme which has been running for more than 20 years, is delivered in Aotearoa New Zealand and in Australia.
