Local government reforms
Local government is going through a period of transition, with a significant rethinking of the way our sector operates going on at the central government level. These reform programmes include Three Waters, Resource Management, and the Future for Local Government.
We will continue to bring together updates on the reform programmes underway below.
The Future for Local Government
The Review into the Future for Local Government is one of the most significant developments our sector has seen in decades. It will explore how councils can maintain and improve the well-being of New Zealanders in the communities they serve, long into the future.
Three Waters
Central Government is reforming the way the Three Waters (drinking water, stormwater and wastewater) are delivered to New Zealanders. Taituarā is committed to working with councils to support the transition, and ensure councils can deliver well-being outcomes for their communities.
Resource management
The Government plans to repeal the Resource Management Act (RMA) 1991. The reforms will result in significant changes to the existing resource management system, and will have a number of implications for councils, particularly in respect of planning processes and decision making.
