Alcohol and Local Government – an overview
Councils have a role in minimising alcohol-related harm in our communities. One in four drinkers in Aotearoa New Zealand drink hazardously, therefore it’s important to understand the responsibilities of local government in relation to alcohol licensing.
This Taituarā e-learning programme provides a comprehensive, high-level overview of the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act to help build on your understanding of what’s involved.
The programme comprises five modules including interviews with industry experts, case studies and resources.

Who should enrol?
This e-learning programme is designed for council staff working in the area of alcohol licensing (or related areas), and those responsible for managing the selection and appointment of District Licensing Committees, including but not limited to:
- Committee advisors (hearings)
- Environmental health officers
- District Licensing Committees (elected members and commissioners)
- Police
- Medical Officer of Health and related staff
A single seat costs $160+GST for Taituarā members, and $185+GST for non-members.
