The Review into the Future for Local Government is one of the most significant developments our sector has seen in decades. It will explore how councils can maintain and improve the well-being of New Zealanders in the communities they serve, long into the future.
Latest information from the Government
At the beginning of October 2021 the Review Panel released its Interim Report. It is titled ‘Ārewa ake te Kaupapa – Raising the platform’.

Updates from Taituarā
14 June 2022 media release: Taituarā Future for Local Government review feedback – We would like to update you on the work Taituarā has been doing to help prepare our sector for the Future for Local Government review programme. This includes feedback from our workshops earlier this year, plus the latest from our Democracy and Participation Reference Group (DPRG) hui.
9 March 2022 media release: Highlights from our Future for Local Government roadshow – We’ve now completed our first series of online engagement focused on reimagining the future of local governance. Thanks so much to all who have participated. We would like to share the Roadshow’s introductory video ‘Ki te kāhore he whakakitenga ka ngaro te iwi’ (without foresight or vision the people will be lost), a brief initial summary of what we heard from participants, and some key files that were shared during the sessions.
11 February 2022 shared files: The Taituarā Executive Board endorsed and would like to share these files relating to the Future for Local Government reforms. Taituarā – te ao hurihuri – a time for change – this is a presentation developed by Monica Frazer and delivered to Taituarā at the Executive Board Strategy Day by Nedine Thatcher-Swann and Monica Frazer. Achieving wellbeing of the people, wellbeing of the environment, in partnership with iwi/Māori: Keeping it real – a ‘practical-strategic’ perspective – this is a think piece contribution to the Taituarā response to the Future for Local Government Review by Chris Marsh, Managing Director, Marsh Public Service Solutions.
