Taituarā is pleased to be partnering with AskYourTeam to launch an annual health, safety and wellbeing survey to enable Councils to measure staff wellbeing. For the first time, a sector-wide snapshot on the wellbeing of the local government workforce will be generated through the collective insights the high-level data will provide.

Highlights from our Future for Local Government roadshow
We’ve now completed our first series of online engagement focused on reimagining the future of local governance. Thanks so much to all who have participated. We would like to share the Roadshow’s introductory video ‘Ki te kāhore he whakakitenga ka ngaro te iwi’ (without foresight or vision the people will be lost), a brief initial summary of what we heard from participants, and some key files that were shared prior to the sessions.
The importance of shade: Cancer Society resources for councils
New Zealanders need more shade in the places they live, learn, work and play. The cause of over 90 per cent of skin cancers is overexposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun. Councils play a crucial role in looking after the wellbeing of our communities by providing shade in our outdoor play and recreation areas.
Library general managers: we would love to hear from you
Taituarā and Public Libraries New Zealand (PLNZ) are looking for general managers responsible for their council’s library (or libraries) and who are willing to take a short survey. This will allow us to establish, and later build upon, the unique role libraries play in promoting community well-being across Aotearoa New Zealand.
Council well-being: survey results released
Local government professionals surveyed across Aotearoa New Zealand have told us where their councils are succeeding in health, safety and well-being, and where work needs to be done. Significant areas of reform such as Three Waters, RMA, and the Future for Local Government have not influenced priorities so far, but there’s a consensus that they will shape priorities going forward.
Libraries partnership
In July 2021, the New Zealand Libraries Partnership Programme (NZLPP) funding package was announced to retain and support librarians and library services so they can further help community recovery from COVID-19. Since its inception the programme has committed to fund and support over 180 people in public library roles across the motu and ensure free and easy access to the internet and library digital services.
The arts and well-being in Aotearoa New Zealand
Creative New Zealand has recently released the findings of its 2020 New Zealanders and the Arts – Ko Aotearoa me ōna Toi research. Many councils contribute resources into the arts for the benefit of their communities and this new research indicates how much New Zealanders value this investment.
